Alternative Work Options

Are you wondering if you could create your own job or what alternatives there are to full-time work? Read this section to discover options available to you.

Self Employment

You might consider starting your own business or working on a contract basis. Or you might decide to join with others to provide a service, sometimes called talent pooling.

Does entrepreneurship appeal to you? Find out more on our Employers page about what’s involved in starting and running a business. You can also check the Government of Canada’s Starting a Business page on its Canada Business website.

The Self Employment Program may also be an option if you’re having a hard time finding work and have the ability and motivation to be self employed. Contact your local Employment Assistance Service agency to assess your needs and see if you are eligible.

Other Work Options

If you’d rather be an employee, you may choose to work in one or more part-time jobs. Or you may decide to share a job with someone as a way to reduce their work hours.

You could also explore temporary work options through employment agencies. Temporary jobs provide an opportunity to try out work environments and build experience toward permanent employment. Search for temporary work agencies either online or in the phone book.

Words of Wisdom

No matter what approach you take, you’ll increase your chances for success by being open to alternatives. Start thinking "work" instead of just "job."
