Many people who lose their jobs need temporary financial assistance while they look for work. There are several types of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits available to British Columbians, depending on the circumstances.
If you want to find out if you’re eligible for employment insurance, consult the Service Canada employment insurance website for information.
To be eligible for EI, you must obtain a record of employment from your former employer(s).
Once you’ve been placed on EI, you can access a number of services to support you in your search for employment.
- The B.C. government’s Skills Development employment program provides financial assistance to eligible individuals for the skills training they need to re-enter the workforce.
- Those who qualify can also access federal Career Transition Assistance initiatives. This assistance supports long tenured laid-off workers to renew or upgrade their skills while on EI.
