A key function of labour market information is to provide insight into expected future trends in the labour market. What jobs are most likely to be in demand in the future? Which industries are expected to grow most quickly? What skills and abilities will be needed? Answers to these questions help all kinds of people make informed decisions.
BC Labour Market Outlook 2009-2019
BC Labour Market Outlook 2009-2019 highlights results from B.C.’s brand new Labour Market Scenario Model.
The modelling system is designed to improve our understanding of current and future labour market conditions in the province. It provides data for anticipating trends in B.C.’s labour market over the next ten years.
You’ll find information on future supply, demand and supply-demand balance for industries and occupations across B.C.’s seven development regions. The annual projections provided by the system help identify occupations at various skill levels that may face shortages of workers.

Other Resources
Other employment projection resources can also provide helpful information.
The Employment Outlook for British Columbia - COPS BC Unique Scenario for 2007 to 2017 report provides an overview of employment projections by major industry and occupational group to 2017. It lists employment demand at the provincial level only for industries and 4 digit occupations. It also presents the education levels normally required for the projected job opportunities. This resource is derived from the work of a partnership with Service Canada.
Regional Employment Projections is another useful source of information. Sub-provincial profiles on employment projections by occupation and industry are highlighted. The resource provides employment demand information (not including demand based on attrition) by College or Development Region. These projections are based on previous studies of community dependencies and were developed in partnership with BC Stats.
Labour force participation is a key indicator of labour market conditions. Another joint project with BC Stats, the BC Labour Force Participation Rate Model discusses historical patterns of labour force participation within B.C. and presents participation rates projected to 2031.
