Assess your eligibility

Apprenticeship combines paid on-the-job training (about 85 percent of most programs) with technical training in a classroom or shop setting. Apprenticeships range from one to five years in length; most programs take four years to complete.

In B.C., apprenticeship training is delivered through a partnership of the Industry Training Authority (ITA), public post-secondary and private training institutions, and employers. To earn your “ticket” to become a certified tradesperson in B.C., you must:

  • complete the required on-the-job hours and the in-school training
  • pass the examinations
  • earn the recommendation of your sponsoring employer

B.C.’s apprenticeship programs earn high marks from participants. In the 2012 B.C. Apprenticeship Student Outcomes Survey, 94 percent of respondents reported that the knowledge and skills they gained through their training was useful in performing their trade.
