Job Description

Position Details:

The Child & Youth Program Assistant or Program Leader is dynamic, energetic, personable, well-organized and a natural at building relationships with children and youth. If that sounds like you, then this is your ideal job! Under the leadership of the Child & Youth Manager and Supervisors, the Child & Youth Program Assistant or Program Leader is responsible for implementing and leading programming for children and youth 6 weeks-13 years, in accordance with YMCA standards and program expectations. Programming includes child minding, arts and crafts, active group games, sports, swimming and camps.


  • $13.85-14.55/hour based on experience

Days, Evening & Weekends approx. 11-29 hours/week

Major Responsibilities:

  • Plan and implement activities for child minding and child and youth recreational programs while ensuring each program is following safety guidelines and is age appropriate
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to recognize and act to resolve problems
  • Enjoy working with children while providing exceptional, quality care for ages 6 weeks-13 years
  • Enthusiastic, positive, resourceful, creative and organized
  • Ensure that the staff/volunteer to child ratio is being maintained at all times
  • Ensure there is adequate equipment and supplies for all activities
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, children and peers
  • A demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
  • A demonstrated ability to take initiative, provide results and take responsibility for safety and quality of all programs
  • Ability to be decisive and deal with constantly changing work patterns and priorities
  • Flexible, shifts can include morning, evenings and weekends
  • Adhere to YMCA Policies and Procedures and YMCA Child Protection Policies and Procedures
  • Promote YMCA's philanthropy through ongoing fundraising events


  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C (or willingness to obtain within 30 days of employment)
  • Post-secondary education in a child-related field considered an asset or on-the-job experience that is equivalent
  • Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Passion to help children achieve their full potential through purposeful programming and implementation
  • Upon request provide 3 references.  A minimum of 2 will be professional in nature (eg. Employer, Supervisor or Colleague.)
  • A satisfactory Criminal Record Check. Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date. The YMCA will provide applicable instructions and paperwork
