Job Description

The Bulkley Valley Museum in Smithers, British Columbia is seeking applicants for two (2) Museum Assistant summer positions. Please note that the final number of positions hired, and the duration of employment are conditional on final approval from the funding bodies.

Work for these positions is expected to take place onsite at the Bulkley Valley Museum. Work from home is not available due to the nature of the job. The selected candidate is expected to abide by all Museum Covid-19 policies.

SALARY : $15.50/hour + 4% vacation pay

HOURS: 35 hours/week, maximum of 16 weeks (approx. May 11th – August 28th 2021, start date negotiable, number of weeks funding dependent). Hours of work are 9am-5pm Tuesday-Saturday, with occasional evening or holiday work as needed.

DUTIES:

-          Rehousing and documenting Interior News photograph negatives

-          Digitize artifacts and archival items using digital photography and scanning equipment

-          Create and update collections management database entries for artifacts and archival items

-          Complete optical character recognition (OCR) verification of digitized archival holdings to make them in-text searchable.

-          Assist with development and delivery of digital content

-          Assist with implementation of a week-long summer camp for youth. This will include assisting with setup, take down, delivery of the activities, and supervision of the participants. Delivery of the summer camp will depend on COVID-19 restrictions at the time the camp is planned for.

-          Assist with general public programming including interacting with visitors, providing guided tours as needed, answering questions, and assisting with the delivery of special events

-          Research and write submissions for the Museum’s weekly summer newspaper columns about artifacts/archival items in the collection. Student may contribute content to the Museum’s social media channels as needed.

-          Assist with day-to-day operations and administration including opening/closing, greeting and counting visitors, completing gift shop sales, answering questions, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Some university/college education in history, anthropology, archaeology, museum studies, library, archival studies, or a related field preferred. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills. The candidate must be comfortable interacting with all segments of the public, including working with and supervising children and youth in an educational setting. Must have excellent research skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word and Excel required. Familiarity with social media platforms, museum/archival database software, and/or photography or scanning equipment considered assets. Previous experience in a museum/heritage environment or with educational/interpretive programming considered an asset. Must be fluent in English, written and/or oral communication in French or another minority language considered an asset.
