Patricia Davies – Kamloops WorkBC ESC – Mature Worker
2 February 2016
Patricia is in her 60s and recently returned to Canada after living in Ireland where she worked as a chiropractor for 15 years. Patricia saw a sign for the Kamloops WorkBC Employment Services Centre, Open Door Group, from the bus stop and thought she should check out the services available. At the time she was only receiving old age pension which was not enough to get a phone, internet or BC Medical.
Patricia’s greatest barriers to employment were her age as well as her limited network since she lived in Ireland for so long.
Patricia took part in the Basic Computer skills, Employment Readiness and Job Search series with the goal of improving her skills. She possessed strengths including: has been a chiropractor for 15 years, owning her own fabric business and experience working in office medical administration.
Patricia continued to access the WorkBC Centre resource room to update her resume and work with her Job Developer to market her employability. In September 2015, Patricia secured a part time job as an office administrator with K & C Construction. She works 3 days a week – 8 hours/day performing general office duties.
Patricia said that working with WorkBC “boosted my self-confidence and ability to compete in the job market even after such a long time out of touch”. I would have to say that the biggest support was the staff - their helpfulness, their enthusiasm. Working has given me extra income for food, clothes, medical & home items.”
