What are WorkBC Centre Services?

WorkBC Centres offer a wide range of employment services --all for free-- to help people in B.C. find and keep jobs.

Body

Self-serve resources: At your local WorkBC Centre, you can access a variety of resources to help with your job search and career planning:

  • Computers with internet access
  • Photocopying/scanning equipment
  • Job boards with current job postings
  • Labour market information including skills in demand, job availability and employment trends
  • Resume and interview information
  • Career exploration tools
  • Specialized equipment for persons with disabilities
     

Personalized employment support: Work one-on-one with an employment expert to:

  • Assess your skills and experience
  • Create a personalized job search plan
  • Stay motivated and focused
     

Workshops (Group or individual): Build your skills and confidence with free workshops offered:

  • Job Search Skills
    • Resume writing: Learn how to create an effective resume.
    • Cover letter writing: Tips for writing compelling cover letters.
    • Interview skills: Practice and improve your interview techniques.
    • LinkedIn basics: How to use LinkedIn for job searching and networking.
  • Career Exploration
    • Personality dimensions: Understand your personality type and how it affects your career choices.
    • Interest assessment: Discover careers that match your interests.

Job search: This is one of our most popular services! Our team will help you:

  • Create a strong resume and cover letter that highlight your unique strengths and match the specific positions you are interested in
  • Prepare for interviews with coaching and practice.
  • Find job opportunities through WorkBC job board, industry-specific job boards, or local employer connections.
  • Customize jobs for persons with disabilities.

For clients with disabilities, our job search service includes working with employers to carve/customize jobs to meet your needs.

Financial supports: WorkBC offers various financial supports to help you cover expenses related to your job search and accessing employment services. Key financial supports include:

  • Transportation supports to travel to attend job interviews, training or work
  • Dependent care supports to cover childcare while you are job searching
  • Essential work clothing, supplies, tools and equipment required for your job
  • Personal grooming and hygiene support for job interviews
  • Licensing supports for fees for obtaining necessary licenses or certifications to land that job
  • Employment-related disability supports

This support is typically available to clients who are case managed through WorkBC, meaning you have an employment plan in place and are working with an employment specialist.

Body

Skills enhancement services: To support improving your skills and qualifications to increase chances of finding and keeping a job. This may include assistance in getting a high school diploma and other academic upgrading, sector-specific training (e.g., in retail, office administration, clerical work, transportation, security, warehouse logistics, and more), or certification programs.

If you need additional training to secure employment, WorkBC may provide funding support for tuition, books, living expenses, childcare and other related costs.

Self-employment services: Help you develop the skills and knowledge needed to start and run your own business. This includes assistance with creating a business plan, business skills training, and mentorship and coaching from business advisors. Potential funding or financial support to help with startup costs and other expenses while you launch your business may be available.

Body

Wage subsidy: This service connects WorkBC clients with employers, to gain on-the-job training and work experience. To enhance your employment prospects and encourage employers to hire individuals who need work experience, WorkBC will cover a portion of your wage. Learn more: Wage Subsidy Program | WorkBC

Customized employment: Designed to help individuals with disabilities or significant barriers to employment (such as health conditions that impede the ability to work, unstable housing situations, less than a grade 12 education) find jobs that match their unique skills and needs. We will work with you to identify your strengths and determine suitable job roles based on your abilities. We will also work with your potential employers to adjust job positions and tailor them to your skills, ensuring you can perform tasks you excel at. Work experience placement services: The goal of this service is to provide you with real-life work experience. You will be placed to work on various projects with local employers. The projects will vary based on your needs, location and employer availability, lasting from a few weeks to up to 12 months, both paid and unpaid.

Job sustainment services: To help you start your new role, we can provide essential work clothes and footwear, transportation support (like gas cards for commuting to and from your new workplace), and other related expenses.
