Duties
In general, accounting and related clerks:
- Calculate, prepare and issue bills, invoices, inventory reports, account statements and other financial statements using computerized and manual systems
- Code, total, batch, enter, verify and reconcile transactions such as accounts payable and receivable, payroll, purchase orders, cheques, invoices, cheque requisitions and bank statements
- Prepare budgets based on estimated revenues, expenses and previous budgets
- Prepare period or cost statements and reports
- Calculate costs of materials, overhead and other expenses based on estimates, quotations and price lists
- Respond to customer questions
- Perform related clerical duties such as word processing, maintaining filing and record systems, faxing and photocopying

Accounting and related clerks must have:
- A secondary school (high school) certificate
- Basic knowledge of financial mathematics
- Foundations of accounting (understanding of financial statements and basic/common financial ratios)
- Computer skills, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
They may also need:
- A working knowledge of data management and accounting software
- Experience serving clients
- College or other credentials offered by the Canadian Securities Institute or Canadian Bookkeepers Association
